Osmunda regalis

Royal Fern

Osmunda regalis - Royal Fern- Deciduous.  Native to eastern North America.  Green, erect fronds have large leaflets, different from other more lace-like ferns.  Fertile pinnae form at the tips of fronds giving it a flowering appearance.  Royal fern will reach 6' over time if constantly moist.  In average conditions it will grow 2'-4' tall.  Royal Fern spreads slowly by rhizomes and grows in vase shaped clumps.  Thrives in rich, moist, acidic soil.  Bright fern for the shade garden, woodland areas, stream and pond banks.  Sun exposure in cooler climates requires consistent moisture.  Mature height 24"-48" up to 6', spread 24"-36"
